The Belconnen Land Release – Place Design Brief creates a performance-based guide that ensures new neighbourhoods are developed into places that buzz with community and business life. The project distils local knowledge and community expectations gathered through co-design sessions with government and industry stakeholders, community groups and residents into an engaging and user-friendly document to assist developers, designers and planners.

The Place Design Brief highlights the significant role that landscape architects can play in leading the development of high-quality public realms that will be well-loved spaces from the get-go. As a tool, the document will assist everyone involved in the redevelopment process in capturing Belconnen’s sense of place and understanding its community’s expectations. The rating system will ensure the resultant outcomes can be measured for success.

This project is an example of how landscape architects can be involved in providing alternatives to conventional land redevelopment approaches and has the potential to inspire other development agencies to take on a similar place-led approach.
