The main intent of the design is to enhance pedestrian safety and showcase the Western Australian landscape through native planting and a ‘dry riverbed’ narrative, which is a design continuation from Terminal 1. The new paving plan addresses issues with pedestrian safety by replacing areas of damaged pavers with exposed aggregate in-situ concrete and large native planting beds.

The inclusion of large garden beds helps to minimise the heat island effect and create a cooler and more inviting space for visitors. The scheme seeks to retain most existing successfully established trees. Proposed new trees will match existing species where appropriate. Grass trees will be utilised to create a strong identity for the precinct while minimising maintenance. The native planting palette uses water-wise and low maintenance species which reflect the authentic character of the Western Australian landscape.
