The original masterplan, was commissioned in 2012 by the ACT and Canberra Cemeteries to provide ongoing land allocation, design certainty, operational and financial frameworks for implementation over the next 20 years.

The initial stage of the Masterplan will provide a foundation for the provision of infrastructure allowing for future expansion, and will comprise the following items:

  • Roadworks & Infrastructure
  • Deports & Storage Facilities
  • Initial lawn graves
  • Initial cremation memorial garden establishment
  • A botanic style garden and landscaping
  • Nature themed playground
  • Landscaping both detailed and broad-acre

A Natural Asset

Southern Memorial Park is characterised by a variety of environmental qualities including undulating hills, woodlands and creeks which all contribute to the scenic and environmental qualities of the site. PLACE Laboratory’s approach is to enhance and protect these qualities into the future.

Understanding best practice in Cemetery Design

This master plan review creates an opportunity to reflect on contemporary best practice cemetery design and manage-ment. Importantly it allows the ACT Government to maintain a best-in-class strategy ensuring the facility that gets built addresses a raft of master planning issues that were missing in the 2012 plan. For example, leading cemetery designs across the globe are now addressing ecological and socio-cultural sustainability, health, and well-being through the art and science of the built environment.

Experience and ability to manage a multidisciplinary team

PLACE Laboratory is currently leading  the multi-disciplinary team comprised of some of Australia’s leading design thinkers, place planners and infrastructure delivery specialists. Negotiating the inherent challenges associated with a large consultant team, a diverse range of stakeholders and the new normal of COVID 19, the PLACE laboratory team have intergrated into the process a suite of project management intiative related to client lisason, sub-consultant management and stakeholder involvement, in oreder to ensure successful delivery as the project moves from the masterplan revision review into stage 1 Concept planning.
