We ventured out of Amsterdam on Sunday to visit a craft market and stumbled across the new residential development, IJburg.

A contemporary canal estate, when complete, ILburg will have 18,000 homes for 45,000 residents with schools, shops, leisure centres, restaurants, a beach, as well as jobs for 12,000 people. Although only half complete, it is already connected to the city by light rail.
I found the architecture to be very brutal and the scale overwhelming, especially compared to Amsterdam. However the homes and local streets all seemed to be very liveable and there were plenty of people out walking and kids playing the streets.
